“Peace Incarnate”was influenced by a smaller mixed media piece “Bodhisattva” from the series “Ancient Relevance”
oil pastel, marker, print on acetate overlaid on coloured paper 17” H X 11” W.
The following Trump tweets were written on the yellow background.
“Such dishonesty!” “fake news” “totally biased” “FAKE NEWS!” “FAKE NEWS” “the enemy of the American People!” The tweets were overlaid by a Bodhisattva image.
I erased the tweets and proceeded to develop the painting. I added a quote from Buddha that seemed applicable “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth.”
Inspiration for Bodhisattva
This Bodhisattva image was inspired from cave paintings from Ajanta Caves in India which are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. The caves include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form. These masterpieces of Buddhist religious art influenced Indian art that followed.
